Neem

Botanical name: Azadirachta Indica

Neem trees are grown along the roadside and everywhere in the villages in TamilNadu. It is loaded with goodness and we use the leaves, flowers and its tender branches.

Tender branches are broken into 6-inch sticks, the edge flattened and used as a toothbrush. No toothpaste is necessary.

My dad is 87 now and till now has never visited the dentist. Because he has been using the neem stick as a brush all of his life.

I use Neem powder to brush my teeth as it is expensive to get Neem twigs here. My gums have stopped bleeding and I have better oral health now.

Neem leaves are added to water while taking a bath since it is anti-bacterial. When someone has chickenpox or any of the skin infections, they add neem leaves and turmeric to the bathwater.

The neem leaves are dried and powdered and added to the hair wash powder preparations. It keeps the lice and dandruff away.

On Tamil new year, it is an important custom to consume neem flowers. Some Temples have a Goddess as the main Deity, and the neem leaves are used to decorate them.

Every house has a Neem tree, at least in those days. These days with the apartment culture we are losing everything.

The neam leaves are also used as natural pest control for plants.
